Sports Guard

Many sports guards of different colors showcasing the variety of mouth and teeth protection options. Athletes who play contact sports need to protect their teeth during sports activities, no matter their age. A sports mouthguard is a protective device made from durable yet flexible materials designed to cushion the teeth and surrounding tissues from impact. They are most commonly used in sports like football, hockey, basketball, and martial arts, but can also benefit activities like mountain biking or skateboarding.

There are three main types of mouthguards:
•  Stock Mouthguards: Pre-formed and ready to wear but offer limited fit and comfort.
•  Boil-and-Bite Mouthguards: Semi-customizable and molded by boiling and biting into the material.
•  Custom-Made Mouthguards: Designed by a dentist to fit your teeth perfectly, providing the best protection and comfort.

History of Sports Mouthguards

The concept of mouthguards dates back to the early 20th century when boxers started using crude forms of protection. Over time, advancements in materials and technology led to the development of modern mouthguards, which are now recommended by dental associations worldwide.

Why Are Sports Mouthguards Needed?

Sports activities pose significant risks to your dental health, including chipped teeth, fractured teeth, and even tooth loss. Common signs that you might need a mouthguard include:
•  Participation in high-impact or contact sports.
•  History of dental injuries during physical activity.
•  Wearing braces or other dental appliances that require extra protection.

A well-fitted mouthguard not only shields your teeth but also reduces the risk of soft tissue injuries, jaw fractures, and concussions.

How Are Sports Mouthguards Made?

Custom-made sports mouthguards are created in several steps:
•  Dental Impression: Manoush Farzin, DMD takes an impression of your teeth to ensure a perfect fit.
•  Mouthguard Fabrication: Using the impression, a durable and flexible material is molded into the exact shape of your teeth.
•  Fitting and Adjustments: We will ensure the mouthguard fits comfortably and securely, making minor adjustments if necessary.

Sports Mouthguards vs. Other Dental Procedures

While dental procedures like crowns or fillings repair damage, sports mouthguards focus on prevention. For instance, a crown can restore a fractured tooth, but using a mouthguard can prevent the fracture from occurring in the first place. This proactive approach saves time, discomfort, and additional dental visits.

How Long Does It Take to Get a Mouthguard?

For custom-made mouthguards, the process typically requires two dental visits:
•  Initial Visit: Impression of your teeth is taken.
•  Follow-Up: The mouthguard is fitted and adjusted. The total time from start to finish is usually about one to two weeks.

How to Maintain Your Mouthguard

Proper care can extend the lifespan of your mouthguard and ensure its effectiveness:
•  Rinse the mouthguard with cool water before and after use.
•  Clean it with a mild soap or toothpaste regularly.
•  Store it in a ventilated case to prevent bacteria growth.
•  Avoid exposing it to extreme heat, which can warp the material.
•  Bring it to your dental visits for professional cleaning and evaluation.

How Often Should You Replace Your Mouthguard?

We recommend that patients replace their sports mouthguards at least once a year. This is especially the case for children whose mouths are still growing. Adults may need replacements less frequently, depending on wear and tear. Contact us at (480) 992-5859 for more information!
