Dental Exam

A dental exam is a comprehensive evaluation of your teeth, gums, and overall oral health. During this appointment, the dentist looks for signs of cavities, gum disease, oral cancer, and other issues. Dental exams often include diagnostic tools like X-rays to get a closer look.

History of Dental Exams

Dental exams have evolved significantly over the centuries. Early dentistry focused primarily on treating pain and extractions. With advancements in technology and research, modern dental exams now emphasize prevention and early intervention. Digital X-rays, laser cavity detection, and advanced oral cancer screenings have made these exams more thorough and efficient than ever.

Why Are Dental Exams Needed?

Even with diligent brushing and flossing, certain dental issues can develop without noticeable symptoms. Regular dental exams help identify problems early, such as:
•  Cavities in their initial stages
•  Gum inflammation or periodontal disease
•  Oral infections or abscesses
•  Oral cancer or precancerous lesions
•  Bite or alignment issues

If left unchecked, these conditions can lead to discomfort, the need for additional treatments, and long-term damage to your oral health.

How Are Dental Exams Performed?

First, Manoush Farzin, DMD will examine your teeth and gums for signs of decay, damage, or disease. X-rays are often taken to detect cavities, bone loss, or hidden problems beneath the surface. We may use a probe to measure the depth of gum pockets, helping to evaluate gum health.

Your bite and jaw alignment are checked for signs of TMJ disorders or teeth grinding. We will also examine your tongue, throat, and soft tissues for abnormalities. Any findings are discussed, and recommendations are provided for treatment or preventive care.

A standard dental exam typically takes about 30 to 45 minutes. If X-rays or additional screenings are required, the appointment may take slightly longer.

How to Maintain Oral Health Between Exams

To make the most of your dental exams:
•  Brush your teeth twice a day.
•  Floss daily to remove debris between teeth.
•  Use an antiseptic mouthwash to reduce bacteria.
•  Avoid tobacco products and excessive sugar consumption.
•  Wear a mouthguard if you grind your teeth or play sports.

How Often Should You Schedule a Dental Exam?

The American Dental Association recommends scheduling dental exams every six months. However, we may suggest more frequent visits based on your specific needs, such as a history of gum disease or chronic dental issues.

Benefits of Dental Exams

Regular dental exams offer numerous advantages, including:
•  Early detection of dental and systemic health issues
•  Prevention of tooth decay and gum disease
•  Guidance on proper oral hygiene practices
•  Monitoring of previous dental work for longevity

When Should You Schedule an Exam?

If it's been over six months since your last visit or if you're experiencing tooth pain, bleeding gums, or other oral health concerns, it's time to schedule an exam. Staying proactive can save you from discomfort and extensive treatments down the line.
